We are excited to be offering this Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) Externship focused on LGBTQ+ relationships and endorsed by the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT). Continuing from the first LGBTQ+ Centered Externship in London in June, 2022 and the first online LGBTQ+ Centered Externship in 2023, we are delighted to be offering another one online. Please note the time zone is GMT+1, or the time in London, UK.

The EFT Externship is an introductory 24-hour training in Emotionally Focused Therapy. The main focus is working with relationships, primarily in couples, whilst we also recognize that relationships come in many forms. Taking place over 4 days, this training includes the observation of live and video recorded couple/relationship therapy sessions, presentations of theory and clinical techniques, skill training exercises, and discussions of cases, clinical material, and related issues.

In this training, we will be discussing, showing, demonstrating, and generally exploring EFT with a focus on LGBTQ+ relationships.

The LGBTQ+ Centred Externship was the first time I have felt truly represented in a professional setting--an invaluable experience. The trainer did a beautiful job exemplifying EFT though live videos and teaching the concepts in an understandable way. Additionally, they have seamlessly woven in common issues that many of my queer and trans clients face as they navigate an often unwelcoming society. After this training I feel 10x more equipped to serve my clients in a competent, sensitive, and relational way. Simon Everest, MS, LAMFT (they/them/he/him), The Family Development Center

Our training will integrate

  • our own lived experiences as lesbian and gay trainers,

  • how to conceptualize and work with the impact of minority stress,

  • further considerations and elaborations for working in an attachment framework with your LGBTQ+ clients,

  • clinical examples with LGBTQ+ clients.

Our stance

  • We believe that lesbian, gay, and bi identities are inclusive of trans persons.

  • We recognize the words that we use to describe ourselves and others is constantly evolving, becoming ever more complex and precise as well as fluid rather than fixed.

  • We recognize the heterogeneity of LGBTQ+ people and will not be able to address every group and theme that could be included on this course.

  • We know that there are many intersecting identities that are important to tend to in our teaching as well.

  • We recognize that relationships come in many different forms and value their variety whilst not being able to cover them all on this course.
